About

Bay Area Modern Quilting is comprised of quilters, textile artists, and makers who gather together to encourage and inspire each other through sharing, education, collaboration, and project-based giving to our local community.  We welcome all who share a love of modern quiltmaking and creating while embracing diversity and inclusivity.  We strive to provide a respectful environment for our members and guests.

We hold monthly meetings on the third Saturday at the Redwood City Library and via Zoom (hybrid meetings) January through November. The location of the meeting may change, given the availability of the Library meeting room. Check the Events page for the meeting location.

Our meeting activities include a combination of speakers, swaps, challenges, demonstrations of techniques, trunk shows, announcements of local and online “quilty” happenings, show and tell of members’ work, door prizes, lending library, and community giving opportunities.

Additional guild activities include:

Workshops  - We host regionally or nationally known instructors teaching a variety of modern quilting techniques and design methods. Additional fees apply. Members receive priority registration.

Bag Club - Bag Club is held after every meeting. The group shares what they are making, exchanges information about techniques for making totes, bag and pouches and consults with the group for help.

Sew Days - These events are typically held on the first Saturday of the month at Grace Lutheran Church in Palo Alto, CA.  Members and guests may drop in to sew, quilt, learn, socialize, and have fun.  Please contact our membership coordinator at bamqgmembership@gmail.com to join us as a guest at our next guild meeting or sew day.  Your first meeting or sew day is free to attend.

Retreat- We have a local yearly retreat in the fall when members gather to do personal or community giving projects, play games, win prizes, share meals, and enjoy one each other’s company.  Additional fee applies. Members receive priority registration.

De-stash party- Once yearly at a general meeting, our members are encouraged to bring fabrics and other supplies they wish to give away and, in turn, may benefit from taking home items that others wish to give away.

Community Giving- As a guild, we support a variety of community-based organizations by making quilts and other sewn items. Recipients include neonatal intensive care units of local hospitals, residents of care facilities, fire victims and victims of other natural disasters, and animal shelters.

Holiday Party- Our December meeting has evolved into our annual holiday event which is a combination of a general meeting, sew day, swap, and potluck.

Participation in Quilt Shows- Many of our members have shown their quilts at regional and national quilt shows including San Mateo County Fair, Pacific International Quilt Festival, and California State Fair.

We have a thriving online community with a members-only forum. This is the place to find details about upcoming guild events and to participate in group discussions.  Connect with fellow guild members by viewing the #BAMQuilting hashtag on Instagram.

We would love to have you join us.  For additional details or questions, please contact our membership coordinator at bamqgmembership@gmail.com

What is Modern?

The definition of a modern quilt is broad and varied. All quilts are welcome at show and tell. Guild speakers, presentations, and demos are focused on modern techniques and methods. This includes but is not limited to the use of modern fabrics, improvisational piecing, use of solids and bold colors, and alternate grid work.

Bay Area Modern Quilting is a 501(c)(7) non-profit organization located in the San Francisco Bay Area.  Founded in 2010.
